Canicross

General information

The competition

In canicross the runner is hitched to his dog. Equipment needed is a running harness for the dog, a waist belt for its owner and a flexible line that goes in between. The goal of the competition is very simple: run as fast as possible while respecting the dog and its running abilities. The competition always takes place on a cross-country track, so always on rural and/or forest trails.

The dogs may never be forced to run. The participant is obliged to stop or slow down when the dog is no longer following. If a runner pulls his dog forward, the consequence will be immediate exclusion from the competition. Evidently, it is also forbidden for the runners to wear spikes.

TCompetitive Categories

In alignment with the Belgian Canicross Federations, contestants are divided over groups depending on age, sex and distance. Distances vary from 2 till 8 km for adults and adolescents.

For the “Kids”, children till 9 years old,  a track is foreseen between 400 and 800 meters, for the canicross the track must be between 4km  and 8 km, spread over maximum 2 rounds and for the cani-run the track is between 2km and 4km. Man-dog teams start individually with an interval of 30 seconds.

The Dog

All dogs, no matter what race or size, that are in good health and at least 1 year old  may participate. The idea is that the dog ‘helps’ his handler by pulling him, but without having to do all the work. The handler must be capable to manage his dog. The dog must be well socialized and may not be aggressive towards other dogs that of course will be numerous at the start.

Before the registration, the dog needs to undergo a veterinary examination. The examination will take place at the site of the event and will be free of charge.

The equipment

The dog must remain on the lead at all times. Best is to equip the dog with a pulling harness so that he can pull his handler without hindrance to its breathing. This harness will be attached to the waist belt of the handler by means of a flexible line of maximum 2 meter. In this way, the handler still has both hands free which is certainly more comfortable while running cross-country. The flexible lead absorbs most shocks and we advise the handler to use a broad waist belt.

There are different types of waist belts available in specialized shops. The equipment is also on sale during the competitions.
A complete set costs about 75€.

Canicross can best be defined as cross-country running with a dog. Competitions take place in an amiable atmosphere and amongst the participants you will find professional runners as well as children and recreants.
